You don’t need a full luxury golf setup to begin.

For your first few range days, beginner clinics, or casual practice sessions, the basics are simple: a few clubs, a glove, comfortable clothes, and a willingness to learn.

Golf clubs and a glove are usually enough to get started at the driving range. Some ranges also rent clubs, so it’s always worth calling ahead before you go.

For starter clubs, secondhand options can be a great place to begin. Online marketplaces like OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, and other local resale platforms often have starter sets of women’s golf clubs for around $100–$150.

When buying from someone you don’t know, always use caution. Meet in a safe, well-lit, public place, and inspect the clubs before purchasing.

Where can I practice without feeling overwhelmed?

Driving ranges, indoor simulators, and beginner-friendly public courses can be great places to build confidence before heading onto a course.

Most public golf courses have a driving range where you can work on your swing. Call the pro shop at your local course to ask about hours of operation, pricing, and the cost for a bucket of balls.

Look for places that feel casual, have rental clubs available, and welcome newer golfers. The goal is progress, not perfection.

Featured Practice Spot: The Islands Golf Center

One of our favorite options is a stand-alone driving range in Anaheim near the Honda Center.

The Islands Golf Center has a very casual vibe with over 80 stalls. They play music, conversation is okay while practicing, and the range has great lights well into the night.

Rental clubs are available, making it a great option if you’re not ready to purchase your own clubs yet.

Who can help me learn without any pressure?

A great instructor can make all the difference, especially when you’re new. We love connecting attendees with coaches and clinics that are friendly, supportive, and beginner-aware.

The right instruction can help you understand the basics, build confidence, and feel less intimidated at the range or on the course.

Featured Instructor: Strang Golf Instruction

Coach Jonny Strang is a friendly, approachable golf coach offering affordable clinics and private lessons for all skill levels.

His instruction is a great fit for beginners who want to learn in a supportive, low-pressure environment, as well as more experienced golfers who want to strengthen and refine their game.

Coach Jonny teaches at David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley.

When he’s not sharing his knowledge of golf on the course, you’ll find him spending time with his wife and newborn daughter.
